Delta Air Lines, the world's largest global airline, will be the founding industry partner to join the IBM Q Hub at NC State, as part of a multi-year collaborative effort with IBM to explore the potential capabilities of quantum computing to transform experiences for customers and employees.

Last year NC State became the first university in North America to establish an IBM Q Hub as part of the global IBM Q Network, a collaboration between IBM and Fortune 500 companies, national research labs, startups and leading universities to advance quantum computing and explore practical applications for science and business. Hubs have a unique role within the network, focused on accelerating industry collaborations, learning, skills development and implementation of quantum computing.

'NC State is proud to partner with Delta toaccelerate real-world applications as part of our IBM Q Hub,' said executivedirector Daniel Stancil. 'Our quantum-trained students and researchers areexcited to work with IBM and Delta to identify opportunities for developmentand implementation.'

Through NC State's IBM Q Hub, Delta will haveaccess to the world's largest fleet of quantum computing systems for commercialuse cases and fundamental research, including the recently-announced 53-qubitquantum computer, which is the single largest universal quantum system madeavailable for external access in the industry to date.

'Partnering with innovative companies like IBMis one way Delta stays on the leading edge of tech so we can best determine howit can be used to better serve our customs and our people, while drawing theblueprints for application across our industry,' said Rahul Samant, Delta'sCIO. 'We've done this most recently with biometrics in our internationalterminals and we're excited to explore how quantum computing can be applied toaddress challenges across the day of travel.'

Delta's CEO Ed Bastian delivered the CES 2020opening keynote address that focused on how Delta is transforming travel into apart of the journey to look forward. The airline is using technology to extendthe warmth of its people to non-traditional airline touchpoints and deliveringinnovative experience that reduce stress across the day of travel.

As part of the agreement, Delta will work withNC State and IBM researchers to create innovations that will inform theairline's future technology strategy, while solving existing business andoperational challenges. The partnership will also allow IBM to betterunderstand real-world business challenges to help speed the commercializationof research.

History Of Delta Air Lines

'We are very excited by the addition of theworld's largest airline to our list of collaborators working with us onbuilding practical quantum computing applications,' said Director of IBMResearch Dario Gil. 'IBM's focus, since we put the very first quantum computeron the cloud in 2016, has been to move quantum computing beyond isolated labexperiments conducted by a handful of organizations, into the hands of tens ofthousands of users. We believe a clear advantage will be awarded to earlyadopters in the era of quantum computing and with partners like Delta, we'realready making significant progress on that mission.'

'Delta joins more than 100 clients alreadyexperimenting with commercial quantum computing solutions alongside classicalcomputers from IBM to tackle problems like risk analytics and options pricing, advanced battery materials and structures, manufacturing optimization, frauddetection, chemical research, logistics and more,' said Jamie Thomas, GeneralManager, Strategy and Development for IBM Systems. 'As the first airline tojoin the IBM Q network, I'm looking forward to exploring how we can worktogether to solve real business challenges in a new industry alongside our Hubmembers at NC State.'

Katherine Lee, better known as Deltalina,[2][3][4] is an Americanflight attendant for Delta Air Lines and was one of the presenters of Delta's onboard safety videos. The first Deltalina safety video was released in February 2008[5] and quickly became popular not only on board but also became one of the most-watched videos on YouTube soon after its release.[6]

The Deltalina nickname came from YouTube viewers who, in the comments to the video, compared her looks to those of actress Angelina Jolie.[1]

Safety videos[edit]

The original, unorthodox 2008 safety video made the news in the United States (for example, in USA Today, CNN, Wired), Netherlands (De Telegraaf)[7] and Belgium (De Standaard and Het Nieuwsblad), most articles noting that the unusual humor might make passengers pay more attention to the video.[8]

Critical reception[edit]

Martin Grant of Forbes wrote in 2012 that the Deltalina video was the first of the 'next generation of safety video' and that the 'talents' of Deltalina 'largely helped' this.[9]

This video however, was panned (in the book How to Do Things With Videogames) by Ian Bogost because, in Bogost's opinion, the attention that is paid to the videos is given to Lee-Hinton and not to the actual safety instructions, that the video made her into 'a minor celebrity', that 'In a weird historical inversion, this very much is your father's Pan Am.'[10]
